San Juan Outfitters
Roche Harbor, San Juan Island
San Juan Outfitters offers quite a few different kinds of tours. Not just kayaking tours, they also offer whale watching tours! We had our daughter Aurora with us (age 7) so we decided on the 3 Hour Family Kayak Tour. This tour is appropriate for kids ages 6-12 years old.
Don’t worry if you’ve never kayaked before, there is no experience needed. Our guide went over everything we needed to know before leaving the harbor. We all felt very safe and comfortable. Since we are a family of three, we were in a triple kayak.
Our guide was very knowledgeable giving us info on the area, sea life, and making sure we felt okay throughout the tour.
Here is a map courtesy of Google for reference! We departed from Roche Harbor, kayaked to a kelp forest on the other side of Henry Island, kayaked over to Posey Island State Park (the tiny island between the seaplanes) to explore, then went back the opposite way around Henry Island back to Roche Harbor.
The views out on the water are breathtaking.
The kelp forest was something I had never seen before. We sat for a while and watched for sea life. We saw a seal and some porpoises! We also sampled kelp. Yep…we ate it. It was….salty.
Closer to Henry Island we could see straight down to the bottom and watched some crabs and fish swim by.
Posey Island is a tiny island that is a Washington State Park! It does have one port-o-potty and is available to rent out for camping.

We had so much fun turning over the rocks and searching for crabs.
We had a fantastic tour and I highly recommend San Juan Island Outfitters! I’d love to go back and do another tour with them again.
