Surf Lessons with Ohana Surf Project
On our third family trip to Hawaii we wanted to do something different. Travis already knew how to surf and loved it but Aurora had never tried, so we decided to take surf lessons with Ohana Surf Project.
Ohana Surf Project
There are quite a few different companies you can take surf lessons with but I chose Ohana Surf Project because of thier reasonable prices, they allow children, and they have family surfing lesson option. There are plenty of options to choose from and different times (1 hr or 2 hr+). We did the family surf lesson so that Travis and Aurora could learn how to surf together and be out there at the same time.

There is transporation to and from your Waikiki hotel if you need it. It is FREE and I’d suggest it over walking, unless your hotel is close. It is located on the far side of Waikiki Beach close to the zoo. Your lessons will actually be in the water out of Kapiolani Beach Park. The waves are a bit nicer for learning. There are restrooms and picnic tables at the park (see photo below).
Once you’re checked in they will get you geared up. They have water shoes, surf shirts, and wet suits available for our use during your lessons. All of the teachers and guides were so friendly and eager to make them feel as comfortable as possible during the lesson.
The first thing you’ll do is go over a safety briefing and the basics of surfing inside thier air conditioned van. This only takes about fifteen minutes.
I sat surf lessons out (I’m not super comfortable in the water) but I was able to walk out on this concrete platform and get some great photos and videos. You are actually really close to them here so you can see well.
Travis and I were so suprized when Aurora stood right up and rode the whole wave her very first try! So was she in the photo. And there’s me in the background videotaping…
We had a blast with Ohana Surf Project and would highly reccomend them for anyone wanting to do surf lessons on your trip to Hawaii!
