Square of Miracles Tour with Discover Pisa & Lucca

We only had one day in Pisa, Italy so to maximize our time and learn about the area, we took a walking tour with Discover Pisa & Lucca! Here is what to expect on your tour and what we got to see and do during our tour.

Though our tour was complimentary, all opinions and photos in this article are my own.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

Discover Pisa & Lucca
We opted to do the Square of Miracles Tour to learn more about the monuments that make Pisa such an anticipated destination to visit. The Square of Miracles consists of the Leaning Tower, Duomo Cathderal, Baptistry, and the Cemetery. We purchased our own combination ticket to the monuments to use during our tour. We purchased our combo ticket directly from the monument’s website, HERE. I highly suggest buying the combination ticket that gets you entry into all of the monuments and both museums.

Leaning Tower of Pisa

We bought our tickets for Tower entry at 9 am when they opened. I highly suggest going first thing because it was not crowded at all. You are not allowed to carry ANY bags into the Tower, but you can use your ticket to get a FREE locker in the Coat Check room across from the Tower. Be aware that there are 251 steps up to the top and they are slippery. They are also very uneven, not just because the Tower itself is leaning but also because they are worn down in certain areas. Take it slow and use caution!

The view from the top of the Tower is beautiful in all directions!

Bell Tower Pisa

Did you know that the Leaning Tower of Pisa is actually a bell tower?!

Square of Miracles

After our visit to the top we headed down to meet our tour guide, Davide. He told us some history of the monuments, Pisa, and the million dollar question…..why the Tower leans!

Baptistry

After listening to the Leaning Tower bells ring (this only happens on Sundays) we made our way into the Baptistry. Davide knew right when to go in so we could experience the acoustics demonstration.

Baptistry

The Baptistry is still used for baptisms today. Not nearly as many stairs to the second floor, you can go up to the top of the baptistry and get a great view of the duomo.

Next we headed to the Duomo (cathedral). Davide was very patient with Aurora and answered all of her curious eleven year old questions!

The cathedral is beautiful inside! Also note that women’s shoulders and knees must be covered to enter, so plan accordingly.

Cemetery Pisa

Last but certainly not least, we walked around the cemetery. I was expecting a regular cemetery but this one is far from ordinary. This huge building has people built inside the walls, underneath, and in the field in the middle. The cemetery has the most beautiful murals, but sadly some have not survived the damage from WWII bombings.

After visiting all four monuments we walked down one the most famous streets in town towards Knights Square. This street is filled with colorful buildings, shops, and restaurants.

There are some fabulous architectural buildings in Knights Square.
