A Weekend in Luxembourg

Luxembourg is the most beautiful fairytale country! Every corner of the country looks straight out of a fairytale. We spent a weekend exploring the capital, also named Luxembourg. There are some beautiful sights in the city and a ton of museums to explore. Here is what we did on our weekend in the city.

Luxembourg Card
Throughout our visit to Luxembourg we used the Luxembourg card to gain entry. It saved us money and was really easy to use! The card is available to purchase in 24, 48, and 72 hour increments.
View more info on the card and rates HERE.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg has FREE public transportation. We used trams, buses, and trains throughout our visit and they were great. I use the app “Citymapper” to navigate public transportation in other countries.

Bock Casemates

Bock Casemates
I know it’s a bit of a weird name but visiting the Bock Casemates was our favorite thing in the city! This really old fortification has tunnels to walk through and explore. It also has the best view of the entire city. The very top of the casemates are free for anyone, the paid entrance is located down the stairs and it is well worth it!

Be prepared for stairs and uneven ground. You can find this amazing view in the middle tunnels.

Grand Ducal Palace
This gorgeous 16th century palace is the home of the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. It is only open in the summer to take tours inside but if you visit during another time of year, it’s worth seeing the outside. You can also witness the changing of the guard here throughout the day.

Chocolate House
Right beside the palace is a wonderful spot for drinks and dessert, Chocolate House! They have seating outside and plenty of yummy choices on the menu.

Make sure to walk inside St. Michels’ Cathedral. All of the churches in the city are free to go inside. This one, with its beautiful clock tower architecture, was our favorite.

The Grund
This area of Luxembourg is the area located below the Bock Casemates. Down by the river you get a beautiful view, restaurants, and museums.

Walking down into the Grund is a bit of a hike (especially going back up) but the views are worth it! We walked through that area and down to the river side before heading back up the other side.

Villa Vauban

Villa Vauban
This cute little museum has a park and two levels of art. I love renaissance period artwork and this museum has plenty. They also have a really cool projector with 3D artwork on the bottom floor.

Drai Eechelen Museum

Drai Eechelen Museum & Mudam Museum
Two museums we didn’t get to go to but wanted to visit were the Drai Eechelen museum and the Madam museum. Something to note is that most museums are closed on Mondays. Since we visited Saturday to Monday our time was limited.

Natural History Museum
If you are brining kids with you on your trip, they will love the Natural History Museum! It is down in the Grund area and has some fantastic exhibits. There is even a slide from the second floor down to the first floor that Aurora loved.
