Hiking: Washington & Oregon

Hiking Twin Falls & Weeks Falls

Twin Falls & Weeks Falls
Both of these waterfalls are located about an hour and fifteen minutes from JBLM. You can hit both on the same day since the trails are about ten minutes apart. You will need a Discover Pass. This pass is $30 for the year, $10 for a day pass, OR you can check it out for free at your local library. If you start out at Twin Falls you can pay with cash or card since there is a machine there.

Twin Falls is about 3 miles round trip. It is kid and dog friendly, and has plenty of parking on the street. There are restrooms and garbage cans located at the beginning of the trail in the parking lot. There are none along the trail so make sure to potty first!

At the end of the parking lot and at a few places in the beginning of the trail you’ll see some smaller turnoffs to the right. These smaller trails go down to the water.

It’s nice to hang out for a while and stick your feet in. There are a lot of rapids and it’s fast moving water so it is not an actual swim spot. However it’s great for the kids to play in and we enjoyed walking around in it.

If your kiddos have the “50 Hikes with Kids” book then turn to page 236 for this hike! It’s got info about the trail and a scavenger hunt. It’s only $13 on Amazon. If you want to grab it., click here.

The scenery on the hike is beautiful. You’ll pass a bench lookout and this is your first chance to see the waterfall. There were wildflowers blossoming everywhere in spring. This big rock looks the face of a man to me, but you decide when you see it!

The hike was moderate to us, its a lot of elevation gain and switchbacks for a six year old so we took it slow. Muffin also got pretty tired out. Hiking and playing in the water, in total we spent about three hours here.

The lookout area has lots of stairs and it’s small so be prepared for there to be a wait to get on it since this is a heavily trafficked trail. If you keep going past this viewpoint there is a bridge that sits above the waterfall for a different view.

Weeks Falls is a lot smaller of a waterfall but is also a lot quicker of a hike. In just 0.7 miles you can be there and back so great for kids. Dogs are welcome on the trail. The starting point is at the South Fork Picnic Area. This is a great spot to play and have a picnic. There are a ton of charcoal grills and picnic tables if you want to bring food to grill. There’s also a large green space that’s perfect for kicking the soccer ball or playing tag.

The trail on Weeks Falls is larger and it comes to a Fork, you can go either way. On this trail the water is to your right and there are plenty of smaller trails down to the water. This trail is far less crowded. Also not a swimming spot, but perfect for splashing around.

There are some lovely sights along the trail, it’s very lush with greenery and wild flowers.

A really cool part of the trail is the Hydro power plant before you reach the falls. You can walk out onto it and it has a layout of how it works and information.
