Athens Food on Foot
Athens Food on Foot offers a few different food tours. We did the “Ultimate Food Tasting Tour“. You can do this tour privately or shared with other groups. The tour is approximately four hours long and costs 74 euros per person.

Our first stop on the tour was a hole in the wall bakery that sells koulouri, and provides this delicious bread ring to other bakeries around the entire city of Athens. Koulouri may look a bit like a pretzel without the twist, but it tastes amazing on its own. It is a traditional Greek snack topped with Sesame seeds and is said to be a natural hangover cure.
The next stop was a local cafe full of charm in the Psirri neighborhood of Athens. Here we sampled a few different types of bougatsa. Bougatsa is a traditional Greek pastry made with filo dough and stuffed with different foods, then fried. We sampled a sweet (filled with pastry cream and topped with cinnamon and sugar), a savory (filled with a local cheese), and another savory (chicken and cheese). I loved the sweet with the pastry cream and Aurora and I both devoured the sweet one.
Sweets are my favorite so I was excited that our next sampling was loukamadas. Loukamades are a Greek donut and they come in plain or chocolate covered. While they were delicious, they were super sweet!
I really enjoy tasting coffee from different places around the world. In Greece they make a “Greek Coffee” in a very interesting way. First invented by caravans traveling across deserts, Greek coffee is made in a cup moved around in very hot sand. It was fascinating to see them make it and swirl the cups around in the sand.
Travis drank the Greek coffee while I opted for a Fredo Cappuccino with sugar. This one is for those of you that prefer sweet coffee!
I bet you are wondering why the food tour is so long. Our tour guide Costas not only took us around Athens to eat and drink, but also to show us some sights! He told us some history about the city and was eager to answer our questions.
Definitely the first time I’ve ever seen a skinned lamb, these are a very traditional Greek food and were everywhere in the meat market. The meat market and fish market in Athens are in the city centre and really convenient for locals to grab their groceries for the week.
While we didn’t sample any raw meat or fish in the markets (no complaining here) right outside the market we sampled some local nuts.
We couldn’t resist grabbing a pack of these caramelized peanuts with sesame seeds, called symeonidis. They really hit the spot for an afternoon snack.
Our full meal was a huge feast of Greek deliciousness. We sampled kolokithokeftedes (zucchini fritters-my FAVE), fried calamari, piperies me tyri (stuffed horn peppers with feta cheese), an orzo salad with local tomatoes, saganaki (fried cheese), tzatziki (a greek yogurt sauce that is to die for), fresh bread, olives, and a local Greek wine. We were so stuffed after this meal!
Last but certainly not least we popped into an ice cream shop for some dessert. I had the white chocolate cherry and it was amazing!
Thanks for the fabulous fun and extraordinary day Athens Food on Foot!
