Warwick Castle

Warwick Castle is a beautiful medieval castle and one of the most well known in English history. Warwick Castle was home to the Earl of Warwick, the “kingmaker” and has a somewhat dim and bloodied history. It offers ton of shows and activities, and a commercial spin on history. Here is what to expect during your visit.

The grounds of Warwick Castle are extensive, so be prepared for walking!

Warwick Castle app

I highly suggest downloading the Warwick Castle app before your visit. It will show you the map, show times, character greets and food options/hours. It will even give you reminders when shows are about to start.

There are quite a few options for food and drink at Warwick, we chose to eat in the Conservatory Tea House to escape the rain. here are more food places inside the castle area and ice cream trucks and snack stops throughout the grounds.

When you go inside the castle there are two different exhibits to see, and there are guided tours throughout the day which are included in the cost of your ticket.

If you’d like to learn about the history of the Earl of Warwick and Warwick Castle, I highly suggest watching “The White Queen“. Though it is dramatized, the show is historically accurate. It is one of my favorite shows and it continues with history through The White Princess and The Spanish Princess.

Tours of the castle dungeons are an additional cost of 5-8 pounds per person. We opted not to do them since I thought Aurora was a bit young.

There are often characters walking around for photos, here we saw Queen Elizabeth I.

During the summer they have celebrations in the castle courtyard with jesters and re-enactments. They also have jousting events and more on certain days.

There are four different shows offered at Warwick Castle. My personal favorite was the War of the Roses jousting show. It is about the history of the monarchy between the house of Tudors and the house of Lancaster. You can pick a side to sit on and cheer on your favorite King/Queen.

In this show you can see jousting, trick horse riders, and get the true history of the War of the Roses.

falconers quest show

The Falconer’s Quest is a bird of prey show where you will get to see a wide variety of birds up close. I actually got brushed on the shoulder by one the large hawks, so I mean extremely close!

The last show that we personally saw was the Legend of the Trebuchet. They actually load and fire a trebuchet.

We did not see the fourth show, Zog Live Show, as Aurora was a bit too old for it. It is a storybook show with characters.
