Things to do in Amarillo, Texas

They say say everything is bigger in Texas and I completely agree. Amarillo is one of the closest big cities to where we lived at Cannon Air Force Base so we traveled often over the years. Here are some things we had fun doing!

Cadillac Ranch
This icon is a very noticeable landmark off the interstate. It is a row of six Cadillac cars sticking out of the ground. It’s a fun photo op but you can also bring spray paint and leave some of your own touch on the cars. There is no fee and dogs are welcome.

Palo Duro Canyon
Palo Duro is a mere 30 minute drive outside of Amarillo and is actually the second biggest canyon in the United States. There are tons of different hiking trails suitable for pros and beginners. There is also horseback riding, campgrounds, cabins, bike trails, horse trails and more inside the Canyon. It is a national park so it is a $8 per person entrance fee with kids 12 and under free. For some theater fun, you can see a musical production called “Texas” that has shows nightly. Aurora was just two at the time so we hiked for less than an hour but the sites were beautiful.

Jack Sisemore RV Museum
If the weather is too hot and you’re looking for an indoor activity, check out the RV museum. It is free admission and is located at Jack Sisemore Traveland. There are RVs and campers dating back to the 1900’s. Most you can walk inside and check out, a few are open to view from the door only. The coolest one is the “Happy Max” RV from the movie “RV” with Robin Williams and Jojo. It is on display here and even has the horn from the movie. There are also old cars and motorcycles inside. The museum is open Monday through Friday 9am-5pm and until 4pm on Saturdays.

American Quarter Horse Museum & Hall of Fame
If you like horses here is a fun place to visit. The museum is open Monday through Friday 9 am-5 pm. Active duty military and spouses are free, children 5 and under are free. Adults are $7 and children over 5 are $3. The twenty foot ceilings inside make you feel very small but the horse history and statues are fun to see.

Rodeo
If you visit Amarillo during rodeo season, it’s a must see in Texas. Texans are very serious about their rodeos. They are fun to watch, especially if you’ve never been before. One of our favorite events to watch is mutton bust in’. They put kids 5 and under on sheep and see how long they can hold on.
