Road Trip through Luxembourg
The capitol of Luxembourg (Luxembourg city) is full of activities but you have to get out and explore the countryside to get a real feel of this beautiful country. Even though Luxembourg is a mere 998 square miles, it has over 75 castles. The countryside is beautiful and the castles are all fascinating. Here is what to do in a day driving around Luxembourg.
Bourscheid Castle
FREE with Luxembourg Card
We started our day the furthest away, at Bourscheid Castle, when they opened. More ruins than castle but it has some amazing views. We spent about thirty minutes here walking around and taking photos.

Vianden Castle & Town
FREE entry to castle & chair lift ride with Luxembourg Card
This was our favorite spot of the day! Vianden Castle was fully restored a few years ago and has a fabulous history exhibit and cafe inside the grounds. You have a few options to get up to the castle on the hill: walk up or take the chair lift. I highly suggest taking the chair lift up and then walking down. The chair lift offers some gorgeous view of the river, town, and castle on the way up. They also snap a photo of you at the very top that makes a great souvenir.

Once off the chair lift you will have a 10-15 minute walk down a dirt path to the castle. It is rocky so be prepared with your shoe choice! This is also why I suggest taking the chair lift to* the castle so you don’t have to do this walk up hill.
Make sure to watch the introduction video inside the exhibit, it has the entire historical timeline of the castle and grounds. There is tons of info on the castle and town, a gift shop, restrooms, and a cafe.
The castle has some really fascinating rooms to explore and examples of set ups inside the rooms with relevant time periods.
After you are finished touring the castle, walk down through the town. This will give you a chance to see all the beautiful houses, shops, and businesses in the village. There are a ton of restaurants on the river with amazing views to enjoy lunch at.
Beaufort Castle
FREE with Luxembourg Card
Beaufort Castle actually consists of two castles; a fully intact Renaissance Castle and some fascinating Medieval castle ruins. The Renaissance castle can only be visited with a guided tour, but the Medieval castle you can explore on your own. Your entry also includes a taste of Beaufort’s own alcoholic blend at the end of your visit.

Schéissendëmpel Waterfall
We wanted to visit this waterfall because it looks beautiful but we didn’t have time (because I had to turn in the rental car at a certain time) however this would’ve been the next stop on our itinerary! If you have time to visit, it looks beautiful.

The Oldest Town in Luxembourg: Echternach
Our last stop was a visit to the town of Echternach. This is the oldest town in the country of Luxembourg and sits on the border of Luxembourg and Germany. It is full of charm and has some beautiful architecture. I recommend walking around and visiting these sites: the University, the Orangerie, the Basilica of St. Willibrord. There are also some cute shops and restaurants in the town square.
