Punalu’u Black Sand Beach
This beach is by far the blackest sand I have ever seen. It was absolutely stunning to see in person. This beach is a must stop on your trip to the Big Island. Here is what to expect when you visit.
Unfortunately the afternoon we drove to Punalu’u it was not the best weather. It was chilly and sprinkling so we did not spend much time here. I wish we could’ve had more time so it is on my list for the next time we go back! On certain days there is a lifeguard on duty. There are picnic tables, restrooms and a pavilion on site.
Unlike the black sand beach on Maui (which is all rocks), this one is real sand. It is volcanic basalt and was created by the lava flows long ago. It is truly incredible to see a beach this color.
On a sunny day you can often see sea turtles eating the algae off the rocks. See some photos from online below.
