Ka Lae – South Point
Ka Lae, also known as South Point, is the Southernmost tip of the Big Island. It is also the Southernmost Point of the United States. It is a beautiful spot on the coast and is known for its cliff diving. Here’s what to expect when you visit!

There is not much at South Point, and it is quite a distance between Kona and Hilo. You will have to make a special trip down here, but it is a quick stop, and you should only plan about thirty minutes here. I definitely think it is worth a stop! Pair it with Papakolea (Green Sand Beach) for a half day trip to this part of the island.
Read my blog post on Papakolea HERE.
Many people cliff dive here at South Point. The jump is quite high, 5-6 stories depending on the tides. We saw lots of people doing it though I think it’s pretty dangerous. There were also people jumping into a sea cave here. We checked out the view and decided to walk to the left side of the coast in this area, about ten minutes further. There are quite a few memorials on the walk.
To be honest I am not sure what any of the memorials mean or who they were for.
On this section of the coast instead of a cliff it is a beach, a coral beach. Literally one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. The entire beach is just piles and piles of coral.
There were also a ton of really cool shells mixed in with the coral.
Aurora also enjoyed checking out the tide pools. There were lots of little fix and hermit crabs in them.
