How to find the Rainbow Railroad Tracks in Olympia

Once I saw a photo of these colorful railroad tracks in Olympia I knew we had to make a trip to find them! The address on Google kinda dumps you out in the middle of nowhere so here are some better directions on how to find them and what to expect.

Rainbow Tracks
701 4th Ave W, Olympia, WA 98502
This address on Google Maps will spit you out on top of a bridge over the tracks themselves, so it is not extremely helpful. My suggestion is to instead get directions to this parking garage, but drive past it and park on the side of the street somewhere around here.

The parking garage is below with the blue dot on the map and the tracks themselves are circled in red.

There is street parking downtown Olympia a well as around Capitol Lake. The spot where I took this photo is where you want to be to walk to the train tracks.

This photo is taken from the other side, and this is the spot you will want to walk towards. There is a small “No Trespassing” sign on the fence, but this is referring to the area underneath the bridge/concrete. You can stay on the path and walk straight. In about twenty feet you should see the tracks ahead of you. The tracks start on the ground and eventually end up over the water.

The railroad tracks are no longer in service, so trains will not be a worry. The tracks are quite wide apart though so make sure to be extremely careful walking on them. My sandals were definitely not the best idea. Unfortunately some of the rails have profanity graffitied on them.

Also note you need to visit the tracks at low tide to be able to fully access the colorful ones. You can just Google “Olympia Tide Chart”. It was a quick visit and only took about fifteen minutes to see them and snap some photos. There is also quite a bit to do in Downtown Olympia if you want to pair it with something else for the day.
