Visiting Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of the seven ancient wonders of the world and it is an incredible sight to see. It is believed to be built around 3000 B.C. and they are not really sure why it was built. One theory is that it was a sacred site. Here is what to expect when you visit.

Stonehenge is owned by English Heritage. If you live in the UK, I highly suggest getting a membership. If you are just visiting the UK, English Heritage offers an Overseas Visitor Pass. A Membership will save you lots of money in the long run. If you are not interested in a membership, prices range from 26-48 pounds for daily entry. You can save 10% by booking your ticket online ahead of time. If you are visiting with kids, the family ticket option is always cheaper than purchasing each individual a ticket.

Stonehenge Audio Tour

Before your visit, download the Stonehenge Audio Guide App. This is a FREE app and gives you some great info during your visit to the stone circle. We only listened to the Stone Circle Tour but there are audio tours for the exhibition as well as the landscape.

When you arrive at Stonehenge the parking lot is beside the ticket office and restrooms. You have the option of taking a bus to the monument itself, which is included in your ticket price. Otherwise you will have about a mile walk, which will really cut into your visit time. The line for the shuttle starts just behind the ticket office where they will double check your tickets. I also suggest arriving at Stonehenge early, the earlier you visit the less crowded it will be.

There is a paved and dirt path that goes around the full exterior of Stonehenge. Visiting the monument will only get you access to the outer area. Please note that you cannot go inside the stone circle at all. If you would like to book a ticket for the “Inner Circle”, that is a separate ticket and is not booked through English Heritage. If you are interested, just Google it and there are multiple private tour companies that offer the tour.

Seeing the stones are truly incredible, and as you make your way around the circle you will notice how different they look in each different area. Make sure you get lots of photos!

You can catch the shuttle bus back and it will drop you off at the Cafe, Exhibit, & Ancient Village. There is also a gift shop and English Heritage member office. The exhibit will give you some more info about Stonehenge and how they found it, excavations, and more.

They have a replica village outside the exhibit you can walk through. They also have one of the large stones where you test your strength and can try to pull it yourself!
