Sunken Ship Hike in Dupont
Have you ever seen a concrete ship? How about a sunken ship? During the war steel hard to come by so a company built some ships out of cement. This one ran aground in Dupont. It is a little difficult to get to but its worth it!
If you want to see the ship then you have to go at low tide. The ship is completely covered otherwise. Look up the tides schedule for Dupont and it will give you dates and times for low tide. The start of this trail is in the middle of Northwest Landing in a culdasac. Behind the Home Course golf course drive to the roundabout on McNeil Street and take a right at Ridge View Place. Park on the street and you will see a paved walking trail in the corner by the woods.
Take this path until you hit the woods and fence in front of you, then take a left. It becomes a dirt walking path.
Follow the trail along the fence and past this hand written map. The path takes a right and stays along the fence, keep walking!
There will be a pretty overlook spot to the left with a great view of the Puget Sound. After you take a minute or two to dwell on the beauty, keep walking.
You will walk through this beautiful row of trees and maybe spot some wildlife. Luckily, I saw this guy before my boot crushed him.
On the left hand side not far past the row of trees you’ll see a smaller trail jut off into the woods, this is where you want to go. Excuse my exaggeration but it’s literally straight down. This is not the Hike to wear your brand new sneakers. You will probably fall, and get mud or dirt on you, depending when it rained last. Someone has tried to help us out by tying ropes along the trail. You have to hold onto them to get down and back up. This is a dog and kid friendly trail, however, make sure that you would be capable of helping them down. For example, I wouldn’t be able to help Aurora down, so we would need Travis to come with us.
You do have to walk over the railroad tracks to get to the next set of ropes and down the beach. Please be very careful and check for trains which are frequent in this area.
Once you make it to the beach, the view is spectacular. It’s a little track down to the ship. Muffin had a blast running around in the sand. There is a large tree log layed down that makes a great photo op.
There is a ton to explore. The edge of the beach is filled with large boulders on either side. There are items washed up on shore that are who knows how old. I found an old fishing hook (gaff), a railroad nail, and a large heavy chain. There were plenty of shells, unique rocks, and driftwood to discover. If you are someone that likes to collect these types of things then I suggest bringing a bag or a bucket, especially for the kids.
There are remnants of what I’m thinking was an old dock. If you walk around it there’s little pools of water with crabs or minnows and tons of barnacles. Flip over the big rocks and you’ll find tons of little fish, crabs, and more!
We went on another day where the tide was in the negatives and we were able to climb inside the ship! Be very careful (lots of rusty metal) and you can climb through the crack to check out the inside.
You can also climb on top of the ship and walk around up top. There is a broken metal ladder under the port hole, use it to climb up (be careful)!
This is such a fun spot to explore and you can’t beat the view. Plus it’s not every day you see a sunken ship.
Finding the fun everywhere life takes us!
