One Day in Hamburg, Germany

We visited Hamburg, Germany in port one day on our cruise. Unfortunately for us we visited on Christmas Eve and almost everything in the city was closed! But we managed to see and do a few things so I will share with you what we did on our day in Hamburg!

First thing we did was take a guided walking tour! We booked this tour on Viator, my favorite activity website to use when traveling. A walking tour is a great way to learn more info about the city, history, and see all of the top sights in a short amount of time.

St. Nickolai Memorial & Museum
The museum was closed the day we visited, though I think it would’ve been really cool to see. The chimes are definitely a must hear during your visit. They are very unique and chime on the hour. There is also a glass elevator you can take to the top.

It was really interesting to learn that Hamburg was a major target during WWII bombings. he city was almost completely leveled. Now you can find small gold squares throughout the city in memory of the Jewish people and families that were killed during WWII. These small plaques are placed outside of their homes or businesses where they resided before being taken to concentration camps.

St. Michael’s Church
This is by far one of the most beautiful churches that I have seen in Europe so far (on the inside). We were able to walk inside and see the Christmas decorations in between Christmas Eve church services. You can walk up the clock tower to the top, though it was closed the day we visited.

I’ll be honest it was pretty slim pickings when looking for somewhere to eat lunch when we visited. We came across Alex and were pleasantly surprised because the food was delicious! A burger, chicken schnitzel, and a kids chicken nuggets filled us up for the day. Fun fact, did you know that hamburgers were invented in Hamburg?

Elbphilharmonie Concert Hall
This funky looking building is open to visitors and we would’ve loved to go inside. Unfortunately it was closed the day we visited but I highly recommend checking it out when you visit. The photos from inside look really cool.

Miniatur Wunderland

Miniatur Wunderland
Our last stop in Hamburg was Miniatur Wunderland, which is the largest model train set in the world! You can see small recreations of different places around the world including Rio de Janeiro, Paris, the Grand Canyon, and more! There are multiple stories to explore and you will experience the sets go from day to night every few minutes.
