Old Town Chania Food Tour with Alma de Creta

One of my favorite things to do on vacation is take a food tour. Not only will you get to try a ton of local food delicacies, you can learn about hidden local spots, get a nice tour of the city you are visiting, and learn some history all at the same time! Our food tour in Old Town Chania on the island of Crete, Greece was one of our absolute favorites!

Though our food tour with Alma de Creta was comped, all opinions and photos in this article are my own.

Alma de Creta has a ton of tours to choose from, not just food tours! We did the Chania Old Town & Street Food Tour. We met our guide Sophia in gorgeous Old Town and started our day! This tour is four hours long and is a walking tour. Kids are welcome! Our daughter Aurora is ten and did great on the tour. Price is dependent on whether you would like a private tour or shared tour.

Our first stop was tasting a traditional Greek food, bougatsa. This pastry made with filo dough and a special Cretan cheese is made a certain way in Crete that is different than other areas in Greece. I partially loved the fact that we got to see this Father and Son duo making the pastry in the kitchen before tasting it.

You can eat bougatsa savory (by itself with the fried dough/cheese) or sweet (sprinkled with sugar and cinnamon on top). Aurora and I both preferred the sweet version. Also having tasted bougatsa on other islands, I can say we definitely preferred Crete’s version!

chania fresh fruits

In the town there are quite a few convince stores that have fresh fruit and vegetables. Everything is Greek cuisine is fresh and many items are grown/made right here on the island! We sampled some fresh peaches and they were the sweetest I’d ever tasted. Way sweeter than Georgia peaches (sorry to my family in Atlanta). These juicy peaches were flat and kinda shaped like a UFO. But don’t let the shape fool you, make sure to grab some!

Our next stop was a plethora of Greek dishes. We tried a Greek cappuccino, malotira Mountain tea, kreatopita, and some various flavored kalitsounia. Travis and I both devoured the kreatopita , which was a pastry pie slice filled with cheese and lamb. It was to die for! I also liked the spinach and cheese kalitsounia. The mountain tea has an amazing flavor and it very similar to a green tea.

At the Kassimatis’ Family store we got to sample some local products including stone ground olive oil (I mean you can’t visit Greece without sampling olive oil), olive oil body and face products, Cretan honey, and some of the famous Greek alcohol called Lyraki (raki for short).

The entire store is full of locally made products and there are a ton of options for gifts to take back home as well. The owner was so sweet and packaged everything so it could fly home with us. If you pop in, tell him we said hello!

I’m sure you are wondering why the tour takes four hours. This is because you are not only sitting down and tasting delicious foods at local restaurants, but your guide is also showing you the top sites in Chania. Sophia took us to see the Old Port, through the market, passed by the Byzantine wall and Turkish wall, as well as took us through the beautiful alleys of the Venetian and Jewish districts. Sophia was full of knowledge and gave us Greek history as well as answered our questions.

Delizia Gelato

Our dessert stop was of course Aurora’s favorite! We grabbed some fresh, homemade gelato from Delizia. They are conveniently located in the square by the church and have a cafe as well.

Our second to last food stop was an absolute smorgasbord. This was my favorite restaurant where we had a big selection of traditional Greek tapas. We tried zucchini fritters (I could’ve eaten 100), fava, graviera, mizritha cheese, olives, anthotiros, fresh tomatoes, and fresh bread.

Anthotiros are dried bread pieces very similar to croutons. They are made from fresh bread though so they taste much better! The tomatoes and cucumbers taste so much fresher than I’m use to. After this delicious meal we walked through Chania’s Saturday Farmer’s Market.

The Farmer’s Market was full of fresh bread, cheese, fruits, vegetables, grains, and more. I only wish we had a mini fridge in our hotel room so I could’ve bought some to take back.

Our last stop was a Greek classic, gyros! We grabbed them from a hole in the wallop down an alley called Oasis. Definitely the best gyros we had ever tasted, and the line was around the corner! I highly suggest grabbing some while you are in Chania.
