Kayaking: Deception Pass State Park
Deception Pass is by far my favorite State Park in Washington. We had hiked there several times and finally decided to take the kayaks up there. Here’s what you need to know about the area before you go kayaking.

You will need a Discover Pass to access the area since this is a state park. Discover Passes are $30/year or $10/day. I highly recommend the annual pass because it pays for itself after three visits to any state park. Day passes are available at automated pay stations in the parking lot.

We put in our kayaks at the Bowman Bay boat launch area. If you don’t have your own kayaks, there are paddleboard and kayak rentals available in the parking lot at Bowman Bay.

A word of warning, the tides in and around Deception Pass are VERY strong. If you are a beginner kayaker I suggest staying inside the bay. Even experienced kayakers should stay to the right side of the coast. To the left and over by the bridge are very strong currents and underwater whirlpools that can be deadly if you get sucked into them.
There are quite a few kelp forests over on the right coast by Rosario Head. These large kelp seaweeds float on the top of the water.
Also keep your eyes open for seals, otters, and even whales while you’re in the area!
