Hawaiian Crown Chocolate Farm Tour
When we visited the Big Island a chocolate farm tour was one thing I really wanted to do! There are many chocolate and coffee farms on the island, and we decided to do a tour of Hawaiian Crown Farm. It is locally owned and operated. Here is what to expect on your Farm & Factory tour!
Though our tour was complimentary, all photos and opinions in this article are my own.

160 Kilauea Ave, Hilo, HI 96720
Your tour will start at the farm. Our GPS had a bit of trouble finding it, turn left at the cemetery and go all the way down past the warehouse and park in the grass. Exact directions will be emailed to you after booking. Farms tours are $10 per child under 10 and $30 per adult. Hawaiian Crown Chocolate is family owned and operated. We saw the owner working at the farm while we were there for the tour. Farm tours are 60-90 minutes long and include the farm and factory/store.

The farm grows many different types of fruits including bananas, mangos, jackfruit and more.
I’m sure the real reason you are on the farm tour is to learn more about how cocoa grows and how it eventually becomes chocolate. It was really cool seeing the trees and fruit up close. They start as these tiny flowers and once they are pollinated start grown the cocoa pod.
We got to see the inside of the cocoa as well as taste the cocoa fruit. There is one cocoa bean inside each piece of fruit. As you can see here, there are quite a few pieces of fruit inside each cocoa pod.
Next, they will show you the fermentation process and the drying process.
This will conclude your farm tour and you will head over to the factory/shop in Downtown Hilo.
At the factory they will continue explaining the farm to bar process. The machines they use to add the ingredients together to make the chocolate and how long it takes.
You will also get to do my favorite part of the tour, sampling the chocolate. Cocoa nibs, dark chocolate and milk chocolate.
Inside the factory you will get to see how they make the chocolate bars and hand package them.
You will also get to try more samples of the different flavor combinations.
We really liked the sweet gold pineapple bar and the milk chocolate bar. If you don’t want to travel with your chocolate, you can place an order and they will ship it to your home. You can also shop online anytime. Since you went on the tour you will get a discount on your purchases.
