Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Sunset Tour
The Sunset at Cape Sounion is one of the prettiest in Greece, and many people come to see it shine through the ancient stone pillars at the Temple of Poseidon. This was actually our favorite sight seeing tour during our visit to Athens! Here is some info about the tour we did and what to expect when visiting Cape Sounion.

Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Half Day Tour from Athens
We booked our tour on Viator (the first option listed below) which has a few different options for tours! We wanted to do the sunset tour for something different. Our tour included pick up and drop off from our hotel in Athens so we did not need to worry about transportation. Our tour bus was a very nice large van and it was a smaller group, which we prefer.
We stopped at two different look outs to take in the view on the way out to Cape Sounion. Our first actual stop was a resort village which has a view of Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon from the water. There were a few restaurants to choose from for dinner and there was also a beach.
We loved the view from our table and Aurora enjoyed looking for rocks and shells on the beach. We also grabbed some ice cream for dessert before heading back on the bus.
Upon arriving at the Temple of Poseidon your guide will point you to the ticket office. Entry tickets are not included in the cost of the tour but are only € 5-10 per person. The line was short and I was thankful that our tour arrived about 30 minutes before the rest of the large tour buses. We had time to walk the trail and enjoy the views before heading up to the temple.
In the photo above you can see the resort below where we had just eaten dinner at.
Despite my photos looking otherwise, it was actually VERY crowded for sunset. I highly recommend finding a nice viewing spot 30-45 minutes prior to sunset. There is a large wire surrounding the Temple to keep people from getting too close, most people line up right on the wire. There were lots of people watching the sunset from in front of the temple (looking out on the coast), but I highly suggest being behind or beside the temple so you can see how pretty the sun is shining through the pillars.
Another note, make sure to use the restroom and get snacks or drinks before you make your way to the Temple. It’s a bit of a walk from the ticket office to the Temple. There is a cafe, restaurant, restrooms and a small gift shop at the entrance.
Sunset was absolutely beautiful, and our favorite one that we saw during our trip to Greece.
