Prishtina & Prizren, Kosovo

On our trip to Tirana, Albania we took a few day trips into neighboring countries including Kosovo! We used Go As Local to take us into Kosovo and around the major sites of both Prizren and Pristina. Here is what to expect on your tour and some beautiful sites in the country of Kosovo.

Though our tour with Go As Local was complimentary, all opinions and photos in this article are my own.

Go As LocalPrivate Day Tour to Prishtina & Prizren, Kosovo
We based ourselves in Tirana, Albania during our trip to the Balkans and booked all of our day tours through Go As Local. All of our guides were fabulous and we had a great time on each tour we did. They picked us up directly from our hotel and we traveled in a small group with stops along the way. Our guides were knowledgable with history and answered our questions! I highly recommend Go As Local and they have many different tours throughout the Balkan countries to choose from.

Pristina, Kosovo

Prishtina, Kosovo
The first city we stopped at was Prishtina, Kosovo. Here you will do a nice walking tour of the city and see some of the sights. This is the biggest city in Kosovo and is more urbanized.

This building looks straight out of a Star Trek movie. It is really unique and definitely stands out as soon as you arrive in Prishtina. You can go inside the main area of the library for free. Quite unbelievable, there are 99 domes on the library.

The glass windows inside the cathedral are beautiful! I also admired the carved eagle pews.

You will see several mosques during your tour of the city. If it is not during prayer time, some will even allow you to go inside.

Librunia

Lunch at Liburnia
To be completely honest, this restaurant was added to my list of favorite restaurants in the world. It is authentic, local, Kosovo food. The atmosphere inside is amazing and there are a ton of choices on the menu including vegetarian options.

I had the Kosovo Meatballs, Vegetables with rice, sharr bread, and nore bread. I also tried the peppers in cream and the salad that my friend ordered. Everything was delicious and my entire meal and drink was only 12. I highly recommend getting a few different dishes and sharing with the table, especially either of those breads I mentioned.

Prizren, Kosovo

Prizren, Kosovo
The last part of the day we spent in Prizren. Prizren is a UNESCO World Heritage site. This beautiful historic town is at the bottom of a mountain on a river. The houses are white with black trim and have brown roofs. I wish we had spent more time here, there is just not as much to see. It is really nice to sit and people watch at any of the restaurants or cafes here.

This museum has a ton of info about the local area and how Kosovo gained independence. Unfortunately we visited on a Sunday and the museum closed early, so we missed it. The house is beautiful and upon peeking in the windows it looked like a really neat museum.

Next we took a long hike up to the top of the city to the Prizren Castle. Only ruins left now, but the strenuous hike up the hill is worth the view at the top. On one side you have the beautiful mountains and on the other you get a beautiful view of the town on the river. After your hike you definitely deserve a gelato!
